Officials investigate allegations of racial abuse during India-England Test at Edgbaston

Warwickshire County Cricket Club said authorities are investigating allegations of racist behavior among members of the crowd at Edgbaston on the fourth day of the fifth Test between England and India.

Several supporters said on Twitter that they were subjected to racial abuse by other fans at the Birmingham venue on Monday.

Former Yorkshire spinner Azim Rafiq shared a source detailing some of the incidents and wrote that they were “disappointing to read”.

Rafiq’s testimony Last year a British parliamentary committee examined claims of institutional racism in Yorkshire and it resulted in major reforms.

Edgbaston’s official Twitter account responded to Rafiq’s tweet saying that they would investigate the matter at the earliest.

The England and Wales Cricket Board said in a statement that it was “very concerned” by the reports.

“I am impressed by these reports as we work hard to make Edgbaston a safe, welcoming environment for all,” Edgbaston’s Chief Executive Officer Stuart Cain said on Monday.

“After seeing the initial tweets, I have spoken personally to the gentleman who picked them up and we are now talking to the area stewards to find out what happened.

“No one at Edgbaston should be the victim of abuse of any kind. So, once we get all the facts, we will ensure that the issue is resolved expeditiously.”

India’s official global supporters group, the Bharat Army, later said that many of its members had been targeted by a “very small minority”.

“We’ll work together @ edgbaston To share all your feedback. Thank you to the fans of England who stood by us.”

The rearranged fifth Test will resume on Tuesday (today), with England needing 119 runs on the final day for a series-level win.
