Bruno Guimaraes will become Newcastle’s record signing if they stay up as fee paid to Lyon for Brazilian midfielder will rise to £41.5m… while Matt Targett could join Dan Burn in making a deadline day move to St James’ Park

  • Newcastle completed the signing of Bruno Guimareas from Lyon for £35million
  • The 24-year-old will surpass the fee paid for Joelinton should they stay up
  • The Magpies are also targeting moves for Matt Targett and Dean Henderson

Brazil playmaker Bruno Guimaraes will become Newcastle United‘s record signing if they achieve Premier League survival this season.

The 24-year-old joined the Magpies from Lyon yesterday for an initial fee of £35million, which will rise to £41.5m should they stay up, surpassing the £40m they paid for his compatriot Joelinton in 2019.

The capture of Guimaraes represents something of a coup for head coach Eddie Howe and the club’s new owners, whose spending has now topped £72m this month.

After landing Guimaraes, Howe said: ‘Bruno is a hugely exciting talent and has been one of our primary targets so I’m delighted to secure him. He strengthens the group immediately ready for the challenge ahead.

‘He has been one of the standout performers in France and is a full international for Brazil so I have no doubt our supporters will really enjoy watching him.’

Brighton centre-back Dan Burn, who is set to join the club for a fee of £11m plus £2m in add-ons is expected to complete his move to St James’ Park before the window closes.

Howe still wants to add a forward and potentially a left-back to his squad before tonight’s deadline. Sportsmail reported last week that Aston Villa’s Matt Targett was an option in the latter position.

Targett is likely to find game time limited at Villa Park following the arrival of Lucas Digne from Everton. Steven Gerrard is understood to be prepared to let the 26-year-old leave temporarily.

Newcastle held talks with Manchester United over the weekend regarding a loan deal for goalkeeper Dean Henderson, although sources say a move is more likely in the summer.

Henderson, 24, wants to leave Old Trafford having found himself deputy to David de Gea this season.
