Missing hiker ignored rescuers’ call because it was an unknown number

(CNN) – Colorado rescuers have some simple advice for lost hikers or anyone else who may find themselves stranded in the mountains – answer your phone.

Lake County Search and Rescue says it received a report last week from a hiker on Mount Albert that had not returned. The hiker left on October 18th at 9 a.m. and didn’t return at 8 p.m. LCSAR said in a post on its Facebook page.

Rescuers tried several times to call the person’s cell phone, but could not reach him.

Five LCSAR team members searched for hikers in areas where people get lost, but the search was called off at 3 p.m. A three-man search team investigated another area at 7 p.m.

They got a call around 9:30 in the morning that the unidentified hiker had returned to the place where they were staying.

The post said the pedestrian was not aware that rescuers were looking for him.

“One notable note is that the subject ignored repeated phone calls from us because they did not recognize the number,” the LCSAR wrote. “If you are overdue according to your itinerary, and you start getting frequent calls from an unknown number, please answer the phone; it could be a SAR team trying to confirm that you are safe!”

The LCSAR said the pedestrian lost his way around night and walked through the night trying to find it. Once back on the trail, hikers had to check several trailheads before they parked their vehicle.

It warns that once you’re above the treeline snow can obscure the trail and that climbers can’t count on following their tracks down the mountain because the wind can blow away their footprints .
