‘Massive’ cyber attack on Ukrainian government websites

“As a result of the massive cyber attack, the websites of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and many other government agencies are temporarily closed,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Oleg Nikolenko said on his official Twitter account on Friday.

“Our experts have already started restoring the working of the IT system, and the Cyber Police has started an investigation,” he said.

On Friday morning local time, Ukrainian government websites, including those of the Foreign Ministry, displayed dark screens with threatening text saying Ukrainian personal information had been hacked.

“Ukrainian! All your personal data has been uploaded to public networks. All data on the computer has been destroyed, it is impossible to restore them,” the message, published in Ukrainian, Russian and Polish, read.

“All the information about you has become public, fear and wait for the worst. It’s up to you for your past, present and future. For Volhynia, for OUN UIA [Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists Ukrainian Insurgent Army], for Galicia, for Polesie and for the historic land,” the web page read.

The Ministry of Education and Science, whose official website is also down, on Friday directed citizens to use the ministry’s official social media channels while the issue is being resolved.
