A spokesperson for the Miami-Dade Police Department said American Airlines employees treated the passenger with “administrative” treatment.
The passenger, a 40-year-old woman, was not arrested.
The American said there were 129 passengers and 14 crew members on board the plane. The pilots converted the Boeing 777 into a transatlantic flight of 4,400 miles with a range of about 500 miles.
The airline apologized in a statement on Thursday.
A spokesperson said, ‘Flight 38 with service from Miami (MIA) to London (LHR) returned to MIA due to the disruptive customer’s refusal to comply with the federal mask requirement. ‘The flight landed at MIA where local law enforcement met the aircraft. We thank our crew for their professionalism and apologize to our customers for the inconvenience caused.’
According to the Federal Aviation Administration, airlines reported nearly 6,000 of unruly passengers last year and 151 incidents in the first two weeks of this year. Most of these included passengers who refused to wear masks.
