There is no player more important than the Australian Open, Rafael Nadal told reporters in Melbourne on Saturday. This includes himself, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer, he said.
“It is very clear that Novak Djokovic is one of the best players,” Nadal said, but at the same time the Australian Open is “far more important than any player.”
Nadal said the tournament would be great with or without Djokovic.
Asked about the situation around Djokovic and what it could mean for his legacy, Nadal said he did not know.
“I wish him all the best,” Nadal said. She had a “good relationship” with Djokovic during her career.
He said he respected Djokovic “as a person and as an athlete”, even though he “didn’t agree with a lot of things[Djokovic]have said in the past few weeks.”
Nadal said, ‘I wish him the best.
Sixth seed Nadal is tied with Djokovic at the Australian Open. But both the players will not meet till the semi-final if both the players reach this far.
Nadal has just one Australian Open win out of 20 major titles – which he won in 2009.
