Dottie Schneider was waiting for her visit from Chandler, Indiana Orange Beach, Alabama for months—but when she and her daughter Kimberly arrived at Waterbury Beach, Kimberly had trouble pushing Dottie’s wheelchair through the sand.

That’s when the lifeguard on duty stepped in to help, taking Dottie to the beach in an ATV and offering to drive her before putting her straight in his chair.

AL.com Reports that Kimberly struggled to push her mother’s wheelchair through the sand outside the Holiday Inn Express, where they were staying for the first day of vacation.

Shane Martin, a lifeguard on duty with Orange Beach Surf Rescue, noticed their problem and walked into an ATV to offer help.

Soon he was driving her across the sand in an ATV before picking her up and placing her on a beach chair under an umbrella.

Over the next four days, Shane and the other lifeguards continued to pick up Dottie from her hotel, carried her to the beach chair, and carried her back.

“Our guards have been instructed to try to help people if they are having a difficult time,” said Brett Lessinger, head of Orange Beach’s Beach Safety Division.

He also said that he told Dottie ‘if the sun was too high then holler’.

‘It was overwhelming,’ said Kimberly. ‘ They were loyal. They were there. It took the whole journey of my mother.’

Although Kimberly was expecting her mother to be up on the beach for just two or three days, she spent five full days there thanks to helpful lifeguards.

He also refused to heed the advice to the women, saying: ‘We only need to see her smile.’

Kimberly described the experience as better than Disney World, calling it “magical.”

We are forever indebted to the people at Orange Beach Surf Rescue. They made my mom feel special,’ she said crying. ‘He was not made to feel that he was a burden on anyone.’

Last week, Orange Beach Surf Rescue posted about Dottie on Facebook.

He wrote, ‘Lifeguards are public servants and we couldn’t be happier to help provide this service.

‘M / s. Dottie Schneider recently visited us in Orange Beach at the age of 95 hoping to enjoy the beach, but was unable to walk through the sand on her own.

‘Every day for a week, lifeguards met with Ms Dottie and her family to help escort her to the beach chairs and then finally back to the condo. The family thanked us at the end of the week in exchange for a fridge full of food,’ he said.

The post has gone viral with thousands of shares, likes and comments.

‘What a beautiful work these young men did. Bless them for the happiness they brought to the woman and her family. Thank you for your kindness,’ wrote one.

‘What a great way to help sweet Miss Dottie her ability to enjoy the beach. Showing such great service and your compassion! May each one of you be blessed because you were a blessing to him!’ Wrote another.
