Leg injury sidelined Tottenham forward Son through January

Tottenham forward Son Heung-min will be sidelined until the end of the month with a foot injury, manager Antonio Conte said on Friday.

The South Korea international leads the team this season with eight Premier League goals, with sixth-placed Tottenham challenging for a Champions League spot.

Conte said the son had a scan after he felt “a bit of muscle ache” in the morning after Tottenham’s 2-0 loss to Chelsea in a League Cup match on Wednesday.

The manager said that the son would not train before the international window in the last week of January.

Tottenham host third-tier Morecambe on Sunday in the third round of the FA Cup. This will be followed by the second leg of the League Cup semi-final against Chelsea next week.

Conte’s team plays three Premier League games – Arsenal, Leicester and Chelsea – before the international break.

Son’s absence could add to the pressure on Tottenham to strengthen their squad in the current transfer window.

“We have two ways to rectify the situation, no? One is to improve the players who are in our team. Another opportunity could be to improve the quality of the team, but as you well know, January is not easy for anyone,” said Conte, who was appointed in early November.
