Lahore: The provincial capital’s deputy commissioner ordered the release of banned Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) chief Saad Rizvi. geo news Reported on Saturday.
According to media outlets, the decision was taken after the Punjab government withdrew the petition seeking extension of his detention.
The development comes a week after a federal review board of the Supreme Court extended Rizvi’s detention by a month – just a day after the Lahore High Court (LHC) declared the detention illegal.
Today, a three-member SC Federal Review Board headed by Justice Maqbool Bakir said the TLP chief can be released on the condition that he is not wanted in any other case.
Why was the TLP chief detained?
Rizvi was taken into custody on April 12, soon after the federal government declared the TLP a banned organization under anti-terrorism laws and launched a massive crackdown against the party.
The crackdown comes after days of violent TLP protests and traffic disruptions in Pakistan’s biggest cities, in which public and private property was damaged by gangs of baton-led goons and law enforcement officers were turned on at will.
Speaking on the move, Prime Minister Imran Khan explained that his government had taken action against the banned TLP because it “challenged the writ of the state and used street violence, attacking the public and law enforcers”. “.
