Khudiram Bose Jayanti: Why was death sentence given to one of India’s youngest revolutionaries? – India Times English News

One of the youngest revolutionaries to die in the Indian freedom struggle, Khudiram Bose’s legacy has long been confined to West Bengal. Bose’s story is set against the backdrop of the political climate and culture in 19th century Bengal, where his intrepid spirit found a purpose in the struggle for independence. Inspired by public lectures given by Sri Aurobindo and Sister Nivedita, Bose turned to revolutionary activities in the state.

These actions intensified from this point along with his attempt to assassinate Magistrate Douglas Kingsford, which ultimately led to his death sentence.

Bose’s mind was molded into a revolutionary frame from an early age. Especially after the partition of Bengal in 1905, he became active in opposing the British rule. By 15, the residents of Midnapore had become involved in structured revolutionary activities conducted by the Anushilan Samiti of Bengal. By the age of 16, he had learned to make bombs, which he would later plant in front of police stations.

In 1908, the young revolutionary was assigned the task of assassinating Douglas Kingsford, the District Magistrate of Muzaffarpur. Kingsford was known for cracking down on revolutionaries. Bose along with his friend and fellow revolutionary Prafulla Chandra Chaki was about to execute the plan to assassinate the officer. The two plan and decide to kill Kingsford by throwing a bomb at his car. On April 30, 1908, Bose executed the plan.

However, the vehicle he targeted was actually carrying the wife and daughter of barrister Pringle Kennedy. The actions of the two young revolutionaries cost them their lives, while Kingsford managed to escape.

Then the game of cat and mouse started and the Calcutta police started searching for both. Bose reached the railway station named Veni after walking 25 miles. It was from here that the police caught him. Chaki shoots himself to avoid arrest.

Bose’s fearlessness was evident when he walked towards the compartment waiting to be taken to jail. The young boy asked the entire crowd gathered there to listen to the slogan “Vande Mataram”. His trial began in May, 1908. Within two months he was sentenced to death. Work. Bose was hanged on August 11, 1908. At that time he was a young boy of 18 years. Today on 3 December 2022 is his 133rd birth anniversary.
