Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer Nitin Gupta has been appointed as the new Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) chairman, said a recent government order.

“The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Nitin Gupta, IRS (IT:86), Member CBDT, as Chairman, CBDT with effect from the date on which he assumes office,” the order dated June 25 said.

After JB Mohapatra retired on April 30, the post of CBDT chief was being held in an additional capacity by Sangita Singh, a board member and 1986 batch IRS officer.

The CBDT is headed by a Chairman and may consist of six members holding the rank of Special Secretary.

It is the administrative body for the Income Tax Department.
