NEW ORLEANS: New Orleans’ health director says he is at one of the parades early in the Mardi Gras season, citing the dangers of reimposing COVID-19 restrictions in the city to combat the highly contagious Omicron variant will not participate.
The Creve du Vieux says she still considers Dr. Jennifer Avegno her queen and will include her float in her parade, one of the first in the carnival season leading up to Fat Tuesday, news outlets reported. Told. Known for its wild satire, the parade will be held on February 12 under the waxed and confused theme.
The Times-Picayune/The New Orleans Advocate reported that Avegno’s letter to the parade group did not describe any specific threats.
But she wrote that city officials are facing more negativity and hatred since COVID-19 mitigation measures were reimposed.
I don’t want to create any security risks with my participation, Avegno wrote, and so I believe the best place for me this year is behind the scenes to help continue to protect our community.
This year the carnival is going on despite the rapidly increasing cases of COVID-19 driven by the Omicron variant. State officials said last week that Louisiana’s surge may be peaking but the numbers are expected to remain high.
A city spokesman told the newspaper that Avgnos’ decision does not mean that other city officials will avoid public appearances during the Mardi Gras season.
Avegno said on January 11 that masks would be required again in indoor public spaces, days after New Orleans entered the Carnival season, which began on January 6 and climaxed on Mardi Gras on March 1 this year. . City officials canceled last year’s parade, and officials have said the 2020 season was an early virus superspreader.
When Creve du Vieux announced Avegno’s decision on its Facebook page, it also said it was shortening its route due to a lack of police officers. City officials announced in December that major parades would have shorter routes because there are fewer police officers, doctors and other first responders to handle crowds.
The Crave du Vieux parade will also include Avegno’s boat and its livery, Captain Sebastian Boegershausen told the newspaper.
According to news reports, the group posted on its Facebook page, Creve du Vieux will leave no stone unturned to ensure that its decision gets our cruise signature treatment during the parade.
