On Wednesday, five persons were arrested for allegedly torturing and murdering a 25-year-old woman during Navratri celebrations at a temple in Okhamari village in Dwarka district after she claimed to be branded.
The five, including three community priests and the woman’s brother-in-law, have been booked for murder, with police saying the men assaulted the victim and branded her an “evil spirit”.
According to the FIR lodged in Dwarka police station, Ramila
Solanki (25), wife of a daily wage laborer, started trembling and shouting at the temple of Goddess Meladi in Okhamari village at around 4.30 am on Wednesday.
Devbhoomi Dwarka Superintendent of Police Sunil Joshi said, “Saying that he was with some goddess, the accused family members in an attempt to drive away the spirit started beating him by grabbing his hair, which led to his death.”
The FIR quoted Ramila’s husband as saying that as she was trembling, Ramesh Solanki, one of the three priests, announced that she was with him.
Inspector Praveen Gadhvi, in-charge of Dwarka police station said, “Around 6 in the morning the bhuvas (priests) announced that he would be beaten up with a hot chain… They even gave him burning wood.”
