Gandhian Gopinathan Nair is no more

Gandhian Gopinathan Nair, who participated in the Quit India Movement in 1942 and adopted the principles of peace and non-violence in everyday life, died on Tuesday.

The 99-year-old was undergoing treatment for age-related and post-Covid ailments at Neyyattinkara in Kerala.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to the great freedom fighter and Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, BJP President JP Nadda and Congress MP Shashi Tharoor also expressed condolences and lauded his rich legacy.

Born on July 7, 1922 in Neyyattinkara, Thiruvananthapuram, Nair served as the chairman of the Kerala Mahatma Gandhi National Memorial Trust, managed by the central government.

Nair, who was awarded the Padma Shri in 2016, had a long association with the Bhoodan and Gramdan movements led by Vinoba Bhave.

Such was his calm reputation that in 2002, the Kerala government urged him to mediate after the Marad massacre when AK Antony was the chief minister of the state.
