Freed after 18 years, man held again on murder charge

Months after a 56-year-old murder convict was released two years ahead of the completion of his 20-year jail term under the state government’s special remission scheme, Shahjahanpur police have arrested him in connection with the murder of a local businessman in Roja area of the district on July 26.

Police said that Tahir Khan was released on January 26 after around 18 years in prison.
Tahir’s name cropped up during the questioning of two other accused booked in the murder of 54-year-old businessman Riyasat, police said.

Tahir was declared a “history-sheeter” by the Kanth police station, where he has 10 cases registered against him, police said.

Station house officer of the Roja police station Amit Kumar Pandey said, “During the probe, we came to know that Tahir was sentenced to 20 years in a murder case. He was lodged at the Shahjahanpur jail. On January 26, Tahir was released from jail, two years ahead of the completion of his sentence.”

Tahir was released under the state government’s special remission scheme, a jail official said.
Shahjahanpur District Magistrate Umesh Pratap Singh said, “Action will be taken against the accused as per law based on the findings of the inquiry into the matter.” The DM added that he would also seek a report into the matter from the district police.

According to police, Riyasat was on his way home astride a motorcycle on July 26 when assailants attacked him with sticks and iron rods near Hataura Crossing. Riyasat was rushed to a hospital where doctors pronounced him dead upon arrival, police said.

A case was registered for murder at the Roja police station against 11 people, including Chand Mia, with whom he had a property dispute, police said.

The SHO said that during the probe, it was found that Riyasat was a distant relative of Chand Mia. In January, Riyasat and his aides had attacked Chand Mia and his family, and a case was registered in this connection, the SHO said.

The SHO said during the questioning, Chand Mia confessed to his crime and told police that Tahir and one Kashif were also involved in the attack on Riyasat. “Chand Mia and Kashif were arrested last month, while Tahir was arrested Thursday. He was produced before a local court, which sent him to jail,” the SHO added.
