Former India women’s cricket team coach and retired India opener WV Raman has been appointed as the batting consultant of Bengal Ranji team for the upcoming season.

Raman will be joined by former Bengal captain Lakshmi Ratan Shukla, who has been appointed as the team’s new coach.

The decision was taken by the Cricket Affiliation of Bengal (CAB) after Arun Lal tendered his resignation following Bengal’s semi-final loss to Madhya Pradesh in the Ranji Trophy.

“Raman has accepted the supply. He could be part of different camps but would not be available throughout the match as that was the capacity both sides agreed upon. CAB president Avishek Dalmiya called up Raman and asked him if he was available, and he immediately agreed to don the marketing consultant’s hat,” a senior official of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) told PTI on Monday. “Raman has served as Bengal head coach in two different stints and he is very familiar with the set-up. He is mainly going to interchange VVS Laxman, who was the pinnacle of Bengal’s imaginative and presenter 20-20 program.

“Shukla will be appointed as the head coach of the Bengal team tomorrow. He has been our U-25 coach and many players have a good rapport with Shukla, who has been a fighter all his life. He is looking forward to introducing contemporary concepts in the Bengal setting,” the official said.

Raman was earlier appointed the head coach of the Indian women’s team. Throughout his tenure, India reached the final of the T20 World Cup 2020, where they lost to Australia by 85 runs at the MCG.
