Fires complicated by explosions and hazardous chemicals

SHREVEPORT, La. Firefighters put out a blaze that involved multiple explosions on Egan Street in the city’s Stoner Hill neighborhood on Wednesday.

The fire broke out around 1.30 pm, when firefighters arrived, they found the garage of the house engulfed in flames. The presence of several 55-gallon barrels of kerosene in the garage was how complicated it was to fight the fire.

Fire officials told KTBS that one of those barrels exploded. There were other small containers of flammable liquids such as butane which also exploded.

“This garage was not being used by truck or car,” said Clarence Reese, an assistant to the city’s fire chief. “We’re being careful about even passing through at this point until our fire investigators are able to investigate, before we start moving a lot of things.”

There was a suspicion of kerosene leaking into the sewer system. To prevent this, city and state workers were building a dam of sand. State officials were also present to monitor any environmental impact from that leak.
