Dedicated student fans stick together despite tough vibe for ‘Dear Old Nebraska U’

“We’ll be together through all kinds of weather for the lovely old Nebraska u.”

The closing lines of the Nebraska fight song “There Ain’t No Place Like Nebraska” are well known among Husker fans, many of whom have cheered on the football team for all kinds of weather.

What Fight Song didn’t address is something that many fans didn’t tolerate until recently. The drought of losing seasons and bowl games has now reached five years, regardless of the outcome of Friday’s season-ending game against Iowa.

Despite a disappointing season that has seen the Huskers lose eight games, all by single-digit margins, thousands of dedicated fans will once again flock to Memorial Stadium to cheer on Big Red.

Among those fans are the students who are sitting in the south-east corner. Only a few graduate students would have been enrolled in 2016, the last time the Huskers went to a bowl game. When NU claimed its most recent conference championship in 1999, some underclassmen were born.

Yet those student voices – not to mention their attire – stand out at every football game. For him, being a Husker fan is a privilege worth celebrating, regardless of the team’s record.

In his own words, this is what it means for him to be a Husker fan through thick and thin.
