Congress’ SC face in the state and former minister Joginder Singh Mann on Friday resigned from the party and as chairman of Punjab Agro Industries Corporation, breaking their 50-year-old ties.

In a letter to party president Sonia Gandhi, who has been a three-time MLA from Phagwara, she said, “I had a dream that when I die, the Congress tricolor will be draped over my body, but with the Congress giving protection to the guilty of the post- Matriculation Scholarship scheme, my conscience does not allow me to stay.

He said that opportunistic leaders have joined the party for their vested interests and the party has deviated from its core values. He said that he had sleepless nights for the past few months as lakhs of Scheduled Caste students were not getting scholarships.

He said that the residents of Phagwara have to travel 40 kms from Kapurthala to carry out their administrative tasks, so he was repeatedly flagging the issue of giving district status to Phagwara but to no avail.
