Following protests by environmentalists, who are against widening the main road in Aarey Milk Colony, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Wednesday said there is no proposal to widen the stretch.
The statement issued by the civic body said, “The scope of work includes the improvement of the existing road to the width available in cement concrete. There is no proposal to widen the existing asphalt road.
Aarey main road is 8 km long and 7 m wide (two lane) asphalt road.
The statement further read, “During the improvement of the road, due care will be taken to protect the existing trees and nearby Aarey forestry. Necessary mitigation measures will be taken as per the directions of the Chief Conservator of Forests.”
Environmentalists say that such infrastructure expansion and improvement could be ecologically harmful to the region.
The Aarey main road connects the Western Express Highway with P/South (Goregaon West), K/East (Andheri East) and S ward (Powai-Bhandup).
In a letter to the BMC, Joru Bathena, an environmentalist, said, “It appears that by widening the existing road,
The BMC intends to allow more vehicles to use this road in contravention of the provisions of the ESZ notification, which directs that traffic in such ESZ areas should be regulated. It should not be used as any kind of traffic short-cut. “
