11 accused in the Bilkis Bano case have been acquitted. All these accused were sentenced to life imprisonment by a special CBI court. After completing their 18-year sentence, the accused had filed a petition in the Supreme Court for release. The Supreme Court had directed the Gujarat government to release everyone. All were released from Godhra sub-jail today on the occasion of Independence Day as per the order of the High Court.
After the completion of the 18-year sentence, everyone had appealed to the Supreme Court for release.
The incident of gang rape took place in the Gujarat riots
During the 2002 post-Godhra riots in Gujarat, Bilkis Bano was gang-raped in Limkheda tehsil and several members of her family were murdered. On the orders of the Supreme Court, the CBI investigated the case and later in 2004, 11 accused were arrested and taken to Mumbai. All were sentenced to life imprisonment by a CBI court. The accused were first lodged in Arthur Road Jail in Mumbai and then in Nashik Jail. After about 9 years, all were shifted to the sub-jail of Godhra.
On February 27, 2002, the Sabarmati train was set on fire. After this communal riots spread all over Gujarat.
Was punished for the crime which was not done – accused
After being released from jail, one of the accused said – There was an atmosphere of happiness in the family when we got out of jail today. We were implicated in a crime which we didn’t even commit. During our imprisonment, we suffered unbearable suffering and humiliation. He also lost many of his friends and relatives. Jashukaka’s wife, who was serving his sentence with us, died of cancer. Apart from this another fellow Bipin Bhai Joshi has come out with a very serious problem in his feet. At the same time, his wife is also currently battling cancer. Apart from this, the wife of one of our companions, Pradeepbhai, has died due to kidney failure.
