State news agency NNA said the death toll in the fighting in Beirut had risen to three. At least nine people were injured in a hospital, an ER doctor previously told CNN.
A high-ranking official of the Iran-backed group Hezbollah told CNN that the Lebanese military said they would shoot anyone holding a weapon in areas where clashes were seen.
“They want to drag us into civil strife and we don’t want to sow civil strife,” the official said.
Hezbollah-allied protesters were protesting a judge appointed to investigate the deadly 2020 port explosion.
“It is clear that those who fired at the demonstrators were organized armed groups that had been planning this attack since yesterday,” the Hezbollah official said.
