Astros’ Ronel Blanco had ‘the stickiest stuff’ felt on glove since crackdown, ump says

Houston Astros pitcher Ronel Blanco, who threw a no-hitter earlier this season was thrown out of his game Tuesday night against the Oakland Athletics after testing positive for a foreign substance.

First-base umpire Erich Bachus talked about what he felt inside Blanco’s glove that caused him to pull it out.

“I felt something inside the glove,” Backus said. “It was the stickiest substance I’ve felt on a glove since we’ve been doing this for the last few years.”

Third-base umpire Laz Diaz was the one who threw Blanco after the rest of the umpires convinced him. He, along with Blanco and Astros manager Joe Espada, discussed the issue before the right-handed toss. Blanco’s glove was also confiscated.

“Everyone checked the gloves to make sure we all had the same thing, and he had to get out because there was some foreign substance on his gloves,” Diaz said.

Blanco denied using illegal substances through a translator.

He added, “Maybe I put rosin on my left hand.” “Maybe it was sweat that got into the gloves and that’s probably what they got.”
