ALMA, Cannes (WIBW) – This is a celebration of over a century in the making of one very special woman in Alma. So special, the city is named in his honor on January 13.
Sherrill Thawe said the idea started with a simple request for a birthday card but turned into celebration across town.
Evelyn Zexor was born on 13 January 1920 in Alma to mark her 102nd birthday on a Thursday.
“She looks almost 80, I mean you’d never guess that the way she looks, acts, talks, she’s 102,” said the local owner of Alma Bakery, Janet Rohleder.
The community came together to mark the occasion with a birthday parade.
Evelyn’s first stop was the church in which she was baptized as a child and where she later married. She received a special surprise from the students of St. John’s Lutheran School, who sang her happy birthday and decorated the van she was in.
Subsequently, the van received an escort by the Wabouncy County Sheriff’s Office to the city of Alma. They traveled to Main Street where several local businesses are participating in Evelyn Zexor Day.
El Coral Mexican Restaurant was selling the tacos for $1.02 and Alma Bakery and Sweet Shoppe had cinnamon rolls for $1.02.
“It’s all about Evelyn today,” Rohleder said, “she’s a special woman and we’ve sold a lot of cinnamon rolls.”
Evelyn’s friends said it was the perfect example of her influence.
“She always has a smile on her face, she never says an unkind word about anyone, she’s just a very kind, loving, beautiful person inside and out,” said Thawé.
When asked, Evelyn said that it is difficult to put into words how much it means to her.
“I don’t know how to explain it, it’s just exciting,” said Zexor, “I can’t believe they would do that for me.”
Evelyn loves to garden and still takes care of herself. He also loves receiving cards and has received 83 on his birthday so far this year.
