Aid begins for earthquake survivors in Afghanistan

GAYAN, Afghanistan – Emergency aid has begun to arrive in eastern Afghanistan, the worst-affected region earthquake this week It killed at least 1,000 people, as the Taliban government rushed to launch a recovery effort.

Naib Khan lost 16 members of his family when their house collapsed on him in Gyan in Paktika province, near the border with Pakistan, when the earthquake struck at around 1:30 am on Wednesday. “I suddenly woke up and felt the ground swaying,” said Mr. Khan, 35. “I stood up to run when suddenly the house collapsed and I heard my family members screaming.”
