Why it’s so hard to know if climate change causes tornadoes

In December 2021, a powerful tornado outbreak killed dozens of people in six US states.

At the time, I wrote about the difficulty of linking these events to the climate crisis.

What is a tornado?

storm Whirlwinds are vertical air columns that form in thunderstorms and stretch to the ground. They travel with tremendous speed and destroy everything that comes in their way.

Hurricanes occur when dense, dry cold air is pushed over warm, moist air, a phenomenon scientists call atmospheric instability. As this happens, an updraft is created when warm air rises. When winds differ in speed or direction at different altitudes – a condition known as wind shear – the updraft will begin to spin.

These changes in the winds generate the necessary spin for the tornado. For particularly strong tornadoes, a change in both wind speed and direction is required.
