28 officials of Tihar Jail suspended for collusion with ex-promoters of jailed Unitech

New Delhi, 14 October

The Delhi Prisons Department has suspended 28 jail officials after Unitech was found to be in collusion with jailed ex-promoters Ajay Chandra and Sanjay Chandra. Officials gave this information on Thursday.

According to a senior jail official, 28 officers of Tihar Jail No. 7 have been suspended while the services of two contractual employees are being terminated. The official said that the Delhi government will suspend the two officials.

The Crime Branch of Delhi Police on Tuesday registered a case after 32 officials of Tihar Jail were found to be involved with the two. An FIR was registered under the Prevention of Corruption Act and the Indian Penal Code and investigation was initiated.

The Supreme Court had on October 6 directed the suspension of Tihar Jail officials, registration of a case against them and a thorough probe into their complicity with Sanjay and Ajay Chandra, based on the report of Delhi Police Commissioner Rakesh Asthana.

The top court had also directed that the Tihar Jail officials, who were found to be prima facie involved during the probe, be suspended and directed the Union Home Ministry to respond to the suggestions contained in the report submitted by . Asthana.

The former promoters of Unitech were shifted from Tihar Jail here to Arthur Road Jail and Taloja Central Jail in Mumbai following a Supreme Court order.

The court had said that some “serious and disturbing” issues were raised in two reports of the Enforcement Directorate regarding the conduct of Sanjay Chandra and Ajay Chandra and the complicity of the Tihar Jail staff and undermining the jurisdiction of the court. PTI
